The Boys & Girls Club of San Benito will host its inaugural Art Show and Auction, slated for Friday, Aug. 8, where they will feature one-of-a-kind creations from their summer art classes.
Director Veronica Rodgers said, “During the summer, we went into partnership with Tipsy Canvas, to provide canvas art classes for the kids.”
The Tipsy Canvas is a professional service that offers students of all ages and experience an exciting painting opportunity without the commitment of a regular art class. Instructors with the Tipsy Canvas are local artists who encourage participation from all, whether or not the person has “ever touched a paint brush,” said Tipsy Canvas representatives.
Rodgers was pleased to announce that the Tipsy Canvas art event inspired the participation of 154 children from the San Benito area. Students were placed into one of five categories, broken down by age and gender. By the end of the art class, each student had created a real painting.
“To my knowledge,” said Rodgers, “This is the first time art classes have been introduced to the Boys & Girls Club, and the kids loved it. Their paintings came out awesome!”
All proceeds from the Art Show will directly benefit the Boys & Girls Club. Rodgers explained, “Everything is going directly to the Club. This (money) will help (fund) our After School Program that starts in September and will help provide scholarships to kids who cannot afford to come to Boys & Girls Club.”
The After School Program with the Boys & Girls Club runs weekdays, from Monday to Friday. “We’re open most of the school holidays, and we help the kids with their homework from 3 to 7 p.m. When the (kids) come in, the first thing we do is homework. Sometimes we have presenters and recreational activities, and we’re starting a butterfly garden,” said Rodgers.
When means are available, chess club, crafts and guitar classes are offered at the Club. “Sometimes, it’s hard to do all the classes (we would like), due to the amount of staff and funding we have,” Rodgers said. Despite funding woes, Rodgers said she hopes to integrate art classes into the Boys & Girls Club budget for the upcoming school year.
Friday’s silent auction will feature the original paintings of at least 24 students, who range in age from 5-18. Rodgers encourages bidders to arrive promptly. “We’re going to try to make the event one-hour long,” she said. “This way (the facility will) have time to do regularly (scheduled) maintenance.”
Everyone is invited to attend the inaugural Art Show and Auction at the Boys & Girls Club, scheduled at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 8 at the Club’s San Benito location, 410 N. Stookey Rd. For more information, call the Club at (956) 399-6442.
