Harlingen-based church Faith Pleases God has partnered with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to donate to San Benito families 500 tickets to the Wing’s season-ending game on Sunday, Aug. 10.
FPG Senior Pastor Kevin Ortiz met with San Benito CISD officials Tuesday to present the tickets. On-hand to accept the contribution were SBCISD Board President Arnold Padilla, SBCISD Parental Involvement Director Luis Gonzales and Positive Redirection Center Principal Rolando Guerra – a lifelong friend of Ortiz’ who helped put him in contact with district officials.
According to Ortiz, he and WhiteWings General Manager John Cannon partnered to offer tickets to local communities in hopes of attracting families to the Aug. 10 game, when the Wings will take on the Brownsville Charros.
“We want to distribute the tickets to anyone who wants to go to the game,” Ortiz said. “It’s an event to celebrate going back to school and to bless the community, and we want families to come to the game because baseball is a family game.”
Isabel C. González of the SBCISD Community Relations office explained that students attending the game will “receive school supplies as part of the RGV WhiteWing’s ‘Back To School’ promotion.”
Regarding the tickets and upcoming school supplies donations, Padilla said, “It’s a wonderful opportunity for needy families in San Benito. It’s a welcomed opportunity to begin the school year for families who may be lacking school supplies. We’re excited and happy about it.”
Guerra added, “This is something for the kids
The tickets are currently being distributed via the district’s Parental Involvement Program on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call Gonzales at (956) 361-6310 or email lgonzales@sbcisd.net.
