Candidates in the Place 6 race for the San Benito CISD Board of Trustees – incumbent Oscar Medrano and challenger Orlando “Papas” Lopez – agree and disagree on many issues.

“My main priority is the students,” said Medrano on Monday. “After the students, I want to address the taxpayers, and then, of course, the teachers. I think I’ve asked the right questions. Let’s be honest here – the four majority (board members) that we have right now are wasting taxpayer money. I think there’s still a lot of work to be done.”

Lopez said, “What I want to do is I want to work hard to ensure that the students’ academics remain our highest priority. In my opinion, education is the cornerstone to any successful nation, and we must continue to work hard to provide the best education that our children deserve.”

The candidates also discussed where they stand on the paid suspension of Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón and the ensuing investigation.

“I think it’s been handled incorrectly,” Medrano said. “I think we should’ve done something about it a long time ago. Whether it’s paying him (Limón) off or whatever the board decided, it’s been too long and its cost the taxpayers a lot of money.”

“Unfortunately, with the issues pertaining to Mr. Limón, I’m not privy to that type of information,” Lopez said. “However, should it be brought to my attention as a board member, it would be my duty to be the voice of the taxpayers who elected me and do my due diligence to look into those matters accordingly,” Lopez said. “That’s what I feel they have done. There’s not much else that has transpired.”

Candidates were also asked about the $315,000 lien that the Internal Revenue Service recently placed on SBCISD funds owed to the district’s on-site health clinic administrator Richard Garza, the owner of ISD Managed Care Services Inc.

“I’m concerned about it,” Medrano said. “I’m concerned because the guy owes taxes to the IRS, and we’re not doing anything about it. We need to do something about it. We need to have a special board meeting or something to go ahead and address this issue.”

Lopez questioned, “Number one: is it going to affect the services that are being rendered to the district? That’s the question I would have. How is it affecting the services that are being provided to our district?”

When asked why voters should consider his candidacy, Lopez said, “With my educational background, I strongly believe in high academic achievements and high accountability of all stakeholders. I think curriculum is extremely important, and I think we need to do our best to provide our kids with the best education possible and hold everyone accountable.”

Medrano said that his experience is what people should consider when voting.

“I think my experience brings a lot to the table,” Medrano said. “Not only that, I care and I listen. If somebody calls me, I’m going to make sure that I take care of it. I don’t like to micromanage. If somebody calls me, I call the superintendent. We direct ourselves to the superintendent. I think I have a real good shot at getting re-elected, but we don’t know, we never know.”

When asked about his opponent, Medrano said, “I admire that he’s running, so I thank him for that. (But) I really don’t have any thoughts as far as him running.”

“I know Mr. Medrano has been there for eight to 10 years; basically, his term is up and it’s time for a change,” Lopez said. “I feel that with my educational background and my experience in the healthcare industry for 16 years that I can bring new ideas and new thoughts and accountability to our district.”
Early voting will begin on Monday, April 28 and end on Tuesday, May 6. Election Day is on Saturday, May 10.

Ok let me guess this straight! You want voters to re-elect Medrano just because he disagrees with the Limon investigation. That’s one sorry excuse when Medrano has been on the board for 8 years and has wasted taxepayers dollars and is a puppet your Mr.T. The main reason our school District is in bad shape is because of this actions and not holding administrators accountable. Test scores express that! Medrano is a plaque for our school district and voters no that! Vote smart!!! Vote Papas!

If Real voters want a change DON’T VOTE for Mr. Patato!! A Vote for Papas is a vote for Iliana. Of course Papas will continue to vote her way. Iliana is the one wasting our taxpayers money with bogus investigations. Has anyone seen the STARRS results? The Real issue is our Teachers, Children, and Administrators!!!! In order to get better scores we need leaders that will work for the same common goal “OUR KIDS” Now if you don’t have kids in the district keep out of it. We need a strong board of trustees who will start hiring better administrators who will in turn make our campuses a better place to work and teach our kids in a stress free environment that will in turn make our kids want to attend school and enjoy learning once again. VOTERS FOCUS on the REAL REASON YOUR VOTING. We’re not voting to please our comadre or compadre. We need your REAL VOTE for the FUTURE of our CHILDREN!! Please Vote OSCAR MEDRANO- The Only Candidate that has stood his ground regardless of who has come and gone throughout his eight years of service.

  1. After all the yapping the fact still remaines , Orlando Papas Lopez is a much stronger, more educated, much more stable than Medrano. Simply ask taxpayers and you’ll see alll the support this candidate ( papas) has, its unbelievable. All I have to say is I spoke to the man and let me tell you his impressive. Oscar Medrano has publically brought up at the board meetings asking what are the allegations against the superintendent so that they may be made public. Oscar Medrano has questioned at board meetings who gave the directive to send out a letter terminating insurance co. a couple of years ago. Oscar Medrano has questioned the clinic’s financial stability. Oscar Medrano has questioned the monies paid to an insurance consultant. Oscar Medrano has voiced funds needed to continue to support and expand the band program.

I have hopes that SBCISD voters will vote from now on for the right candidates; the ones that have struggled to obtain an education one way or another. A candidate that is a successful business person. A person that has given up a lot of their time by doing community service. We, as voters, cannot deny that being chairperson of Resaca Fest, President of Kiwanis, etc. is very demanding. There are several citizens in SB that do this kind of service and understand and acknowledge the time that Oscar Medrano has voluntarily given to the community.

And with that, I am not implicating that just because a person has not attained a degree that it does not qualify him to be a good candidate. If there was a candidate that through the years was involved with his/her community, a person in good standing, respected and admired, yet had not attained a degree; And you had a candidate that no one ever heard of, yet had a degree; In my opinion the most qualified would be the most giving person.

In the case of Oscar Medrano, he definitely qualifies. Has attained a degree and has done enormously community service.

Thank you for reading this blog.

It would be nice to have a united school board that performed wisely and ethically and gave Chuy and Mr. T the bird in process of it all.

All 7 board members – try standing up for what you believe in (not what others are in favor of) and supporting what’s best for the school district and it’s students.

Based on this principle, the race between Oscar and Papas is a lose lose. Papas supports Yliana and Chuy (the other 3 answer to one or the other or both). That’s unacceptable. Oscar flat out can’t get anything done. He can stand up against the 4 and disagree with them all he wants, but at the end of the day, even that gets nothing done. That’s unacceptable.

Maybe we can insert words like “bomb” or “terrorist” into our comments and send off red flags so that the Feds (and TEA) will finally notice and investigate this evil circus called the SBCISD school board. Maybe then things will actually get somewhere and problems will be resolved.

    Chuy & Mr. T,

For the remaining unenlightened who fault Medrano for the sins of the majority, as if he’s to blame because he “didn’t do enough” to stop the majority, let me remind you that this is a democracy, and no agency will interfere with the actions of a governing body elected by the people absent blatantly criminal behavior or a pattern of long term abuse. Medrano has no power to stop the majority. None. The only one with the power to put an end to the abuses by the majority is the voter.

Every vote for Medrano on May 10th, is a vote to end the embarrassment that is the current SBCISD board. Any vote for his opponent is an endorsement of the incompetence we have now.

“It’s stupid to think that because the man who’s not doing enough to stop the bleeding is worse than the man who’ll cause more bleeding.” It’s stupid to pretend like you know what will happen in the future. Whether he does it or not, it hasn’t happened. There is a 50/50 chance of him doing right/wrong. Those are better odds than picking “the guy who’ll do nothing”. If a doctor can’t stop a patient from bleeding, general consensus is that the patient will die. “I’d rather vote for the guy who’ll do nothing” Now that’s stupid. School Board members aren’t voted onto the school board to “do nothing”

-based upon your argument of course.

That would be stupid, if it was my argument. You took my comment out of context! The comment in its entirety is: “I’d rather vote for the guy who’ll do nothing than the guy who’ll do something…wrong.” It’s funny how you left out the part that Papas would be a vote for someone who would do more harm than good. It’s also not pretending to acknowledge that Papas has already gotten off on the wrong foot by basically mimicking the response of the board majority when faced with tough questions. A precursor of ignorance and ineptness is definitely NOT pretend.

      • Reply

You want a “better argument”? I can give you five.

      1. Oscar Medrano was actively against suspending Mr. Limon and paying two superintendents while simultaneously paying Mr. Limon for sitting at home and plotting his lawsuit, which will undoubtedly cost the district much more. Papas was quoted in the San Benito News stating his favor of the board majority’s actions when it comes to the manner Mr. Limon’s case was handled. It’s almost common knowledge throughout the Valley, save for the blind supporters and relatives of the board majority, that the way the board has handled the investigation into Mr. Limon was so inept that it was shocking.

      2. By your own admission, the board majority’s actions have been insane. A vote for Oscar, one of the few people who has stood up to them in public and in private, is much better than a vote for someone who is admittedly supportive of the “madness” you speak of.

      3. Oscar was one of only a few on the board who refused to go back into business with the health clinic administrator who owed the IRS something like $100,000 dollars, but thanks to the board majority that same administrator was hired again and again owes the IRS, only much more this time! Papas barely even wanted to acknowledge it, and when he did it seemed wishy washy. Papas said he has to find out whether it’s directly affecting the district!! My God, man. You have to ASK????

      4. Oscar dresses far better.

      5. I can’t take a candidate who calls himself “Papas” on an election ballot seriously. This is an election, not a high school prom vote.

Now that was much better. Good points. Much better than you’re original reply. Although points 4 & 5 are opinions and not actual points. We will let that slide for now. My question is this: what will Oscar do differently this time around than his current time around. I understand he is part of the minority and it is hard to get things done. I do. But that’s a poor excuse when so much money and students’ future are being wasted. As hard as he may try and as much as he may care, he honestly needs to try and care harder. All 7 do. To unite the board. Spend money wisely. Make better decisions. Stop the favor for favors. Stop the Chuy bs. Stop the T bs. They are both evil. If they want the say so, let them run and have their time. Stand up for what is right. No more back stabbing. Stand up for themselves, not what others want them to stand up for. No more empty promises. Grow a pair. No more lies. All 7 are guilty of this.

    Wait a second here. So because Oscar is not a new face and had his chance y’all’s votes will be going to Papas, which is basically a vote for the Yliana/June/Huerta siblings, the same people who have run this district into the ground and caused irreparable harm to the district’s image, finances, and students???? A vote for Papas IS a vote for the same ole board majority power that has been destroying the district for years! These are the people that didn’t know it was a violation of district policy to unilaterally change the district’s insurance agent without it going through the board first. They screwed up students’ education, just look at the recent scores! This year, without Mr. Limon, and under the guidance of interim superintendents hand-picked by the board majority, who Papas represents, schools got LAUGHABLE and EMBARRASSING scores!! This is who Papas represents, the biggest joke of a school board ever BECAUSE of the actions of the majority! And the other options? Bobby Benavides, the brother in law of the Huertas!!?? So if Bobby is elected and Julian is elected, there will be THREE siblings sitting on the board???? Y’all need to get your heads out of where the sun don’t shine and VOTE OUT absolutely ANYBODY who is sympathetic, agrees with, or represents the board majority, and that’s Papas, Bobby Benavides, June Aguilera, and Julian Huerta. And Letty S., 5th grader actually had less errors in his comment than you did!! So shut up and go back to grammar school.       To Whom It May Concern;

Without prejudice, favoritism, and sarcasm –

What will Oscar do? So far, Oscar has done nothing to stop the madness the Majority 4 has done and continues to do. Hasn’t been able to bring unity to the board. Hasn’t been able to change the board wasting money and playing favorite to chuy etc etc etc. He is just as guilty as the other 6. He might not be doing wrong, but he isn’t doing anything to prevent or stop or change the wrong. Why vote for him? It is unfortunate to resort to voting for “Papas”, but what other choice is there? The previous board majority had problems. The current board majority has problems. It is very sad the predicament that the SBCISD Board seems to always be in. Maybe “Papas” won’t be the guy that everyone seems to know he will be and will actually make a change and turn the school board around. But San Benito will never find that out if they vote to keep Medrano on board. Its a sad chance to take, but it appears to be the only one. Voting out the other 3 along with Medrano is the only way to get rid of those 4’s unproductive school board abilities. I hate to admit that, but until someone provides a logical explanation to not vote off the 4 up for reelection, what other chance is there?

        • Y’all’s is the possessive form of y’all, which is the derivation of you all, etymologically speaking, of course.

        • The use of multiple question marks indicates emphasis, so as to make a point. This is not incorrect but a form of accentuation common on the internet.

        • Same ole is a variant/slang for same old.

I feel really embarrassed for you right now, Letty S. Don’t you also think it’s a little convenient that when the scores tank, you blame the people who weren’t even a factor that year? Take responsibility for the fact that the EMBARRASSING scores occurred under the watch of the majority board members during a period when they went unchallenged! A vote for Papas, Julian Huerta, June Aguilera and Bobby Benavides is a vote for more unrivaled stupidity that has led the district to nothing but ruin! Saying that the bad scores are Mr. Limon’s fault when he wasn’t even relevant this year is an Ylianaism. (I coined this phrase to describe Yliana’s backwards logic.)

TWIMC, I can dismantle your argument in one brief rebuttal. I’d rather vote for the guy who’ll do nothing than the guy who’ll do something…wrong. It’s stupid to think that because the man who’s not doing enough to stop the bleeding is worse than the man who’ll cause more bleeding. Oscar = lesser of two evils.

        Argument won.

          At really (T),

Letty made a great point. Quit with the slang!

That is the stupidest argument: “I’d rather vote for the guy who’ll do nothing than the guy who’ll so something…wrong” – Thats a presumption! You have no idea what Mr. Lopez is capable of or his potential, but “y’all” will find out when he’s elected!

Mr. Lopez, see you sitting in Place 6 soon.

A presumption? Do you read? Papas was favorable of the board majority’s handling of Mr. Limon’s investigation AND denied that nothing else has transpired. Really??? NOTHING???? That’s already a negative in his column. Papas is either ill-informed or has missed the boat on the hundred dollar emails and hard work the law firm investigating Mr. Limon is exerting when receiving documentation, hard work that’s costing the district $20,000 dollars for an investigation that ignored something like 60 accusations and settled on looking into two or three. And that’s just off the top of my head! So either I’m more informed than Papas or my understanding of the situation is much better. ME! A layman and non-insider! And I’m supposed to seriously consider Papas as a viable candidate when the average joe knows more than he does? LOL!

Oh yeah, and I trust Webster over you:
            “Definition of Y’ALL
            variant of you-all”

You might also want to invest in “Higher” learning before beginning a prefacing statement with “That” instead of “This”. Checkmate. Up for round two?

what we really need are school board members that have integrity and aren’t easily persuaded by others. that stand alone yet stand together united as school board of 7, not 4 or 3.

    aye papi!

eloquent answers are just that. eloquent answers. wasting money, favor for favors, and a split school board are the changes that need to be made. that’s what needs to be done. not eloquent answers. we already have that in obama. hopefully “Mr. Lopez” is more than just an eloquent answer a 5th grader can be trained to say.

    fyi, it’s a comment – not a blog. i’m pretty sure a 5th grader would know that.

academic scores are pretty lousy – i will agree with you on that one. several elementary schools with sub 70% passing rates this year. perhaps “Mr. Lopez” should address his school board “friend” as to why this is.

    Mr. Lopez has my vote!

Go Papas Go! – Talk about needing to get rid of a “moniker (nickname, in case you don’t know what it means)” – DING DING DING DING DING!!!!!

Now you are concerned about tax payers.
You spend more tax payers money when you and your friends Oscar de la Fuentes, Joe G Gonzales and your papi Bob T. Terminated Mr. Gonzales and Mr. Benavides you guys spend over $300,000 on investigations, attorney’s fees and nothing was done they got cleared and a lot of tax payers money, just because of your clicka wanting to hire Mr. Limon.
Please Oscar Medrano be honest to our kids, teachers and the community of San Benito.

@ 5th grader:Maybe, but not here in San Benito considering our academic scores.
What you should do is stop acting like a 5th grade and place your real name on yuor blog..
Stop hiding behind a moniker (nickname, in case you don’t know what it means)….oh wait, that’s an advanced term for you.

In my opinion, Mr. Lopez’s answers were eloquent and should serve as a reminder as to why he should be elected.

    Mr.Lopez has my vote!

Please Oscar you made a mistake, you team up with Ana Cruz, bad move.
I am not voting for u this time.
It’s time to get new faces on the board, you are old news Mr Medrano.

Mark my words, you’ll be losing this race by many votes.

Orlando Papas Lopez make it happen, don’t do it like Oscar Medrano just words. Lets get real and show San Benito that you are for real.

Even though the haters have attempted to make Medrano the bad guy my claiming all manner of bad deeds, I;m going with Oscar again. From all indications the other guy will not be independent and is being supported by one of cliques.

“What I want to do is I want to work hard to ensure that the students’ academics remain our highest priority. In my opinion, education is the cornerstone to any successful nation, and we must continue to work hard to provide the best education that our children deserve.”

A 5th grader can be trained to give that answer.

Actions speak louder than words. Let’s see what happens when Mr. Potato Head get on board with his buddy Yliana. We will see what happens then.

Unfortunately, it’s time for Medrano to go. Medrano can say what he wants. He’s been there long enough. He hasn’t been able to work with others and hasn’t been able to make change for the better. His time is up.
