Popeyes logoSan Benito Mayor Joe H. Hernandez confirmed that Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen will be opening soon in San Benito off of West Expressway 83 next to the Best Western Garden Inn & Suites.

“It’s been several months that it’s been in the making, and it’s finally becoming a reality,” said Hernandez. “It’s good for San Benito; it’s a new place where they can go eat. On behalf of the commission, I’d like to say thank you to Popeyes for choosing San Benito to do their business here. We wish them the best of luck and we’re very happy.”

San Benito needs new businesses to thrive. If you drive downtown it looks like a ghost town. Our town needs a lot of help. What our elected officials need to do is stop pointing fingers and do something to get the San Benito residents to spend their tax dollars here. I think our elected officials have let the residents of San Benito down by sending San Benito residents off to shop in neighboring towns. Harlingen is thriving and coming up with new businesses in their area all the time. The city of San Benito have a lot of property they can utilize to make this town a success. Instead of worrying about our Resaca walk (which although beautiful ) should not be top of the list. If you want to talk about budget….which seems to be the excuse…..I’m sure there’s way to improvise. Something needs to be done now before we become another pass thru town.

If we are gonna prosper and improve San Benito as a city why c/o every little positive thing that comes toSB . You people are the type that complain its too hot and dry outside but when it cools down and rains,”its too much!”? You complain about people in office but never go vote.
Wheres the complaints about ” market days “? A majority of people sell plants but do you complain about how that contributes to low water levels at the Dam and high water rates because.”people will use more water?”
Fast food ect is a business,it will stand or fall if people love it enough. If your worried about unhealthy food, move to NY. Last time I heard (although seems not for long),this is a free country still.
We have a very unique city, full of possibilities . It takes money to move projects and repairs ,just like at your houses and my house. Unfortunately,SB has to budget, pick the most pertinent repairs.
Do you pave street or fix water/sewer line if you had those choices,,,

I would like to see a comparison of new businesses in San Benito to Harlingen for the past year, 5 years and 10 years. Our city I believe is really behind when it comes to economic development. Hopefully with the Resaca Boardwalk it will change. We need to capitalize on our resaca because in comparison to the Harlingen trail ours does not flood. If we would promote it more maybe we could get some of those walkers to visit our town. Also San Benito was the location of only the second sighting of the rare kingfisher yet we don’t ever promote all the bird watching that can be done in our city. Birding is a multimillion dollar tourist industry and we could grow in that way.

      1) Comparing San Benito to Harlingen is not a logical, reasonable, fair, etc etc thing to do in many aspects.

      2) Intstead of complaining about something how about doing something about it. ???

I did do many things trying to help the city. I started Tunes by the tracks many years ago, they transitioned it to tunes by the trail. Each time I provided the city and visitors to the event with 4 hours of free entertainment. My sons and I stood on street corners for several weeks before the trail was actually built gathering signatures for the trail. I also made a restaurant guide that I have updated throughout the past 8 years or more and I have shared it with the city on various occasions. Each time only to have the city drop the ball and not make copies. I have spent several hundred dollars making copies of this guide and have shared copies in my singing engagements at various cities throughout the valley trying to bring in people to our city. I spent many hours writing letters to over 100 large companies letting them know about our city. Each letter contained a various maps of the state, county and city along with data on our economy, education system, our work force and listing of various possible future business locations in our city. All of this I did with money that came out of my own pocket.

It is rather difficult to promote the resaca when this newspaper reported on their July 5, 2013 edition that the south end of the resaca fishing pier was closed for repairs..

Six months later, the fishing pier is in worst shape and not even enclosed to prevent its use.

It is complete lack of responsibility on the part of the mayor, the city manager and the city commission to allow this to happen and subjecting the taxpayers to a huge lawsuit should a kid get hurt.

It will take just one accident or tragedy and the taxpayers will be footing a huge lawsuit settlement!

Check out the pics below taken this week during lunch time! Some of these holes are about 2 feet wide. This should NOT be allowed to happen.

Quickie Loans, sno-cones and fried chicken! Who could ask for more!??!
In the real world, a fast food joint could hardly be viewed as economic development. How many sustainable jobs will they create?? (Not counting the manager who will be required to work 70 hours a week to make a living). Oh well, it could be worse…we could LIVE in Louisiana!

    re: sbperson

    Good question.

    Elections? perhaps.

The pot holes, the streets? Very bad before the rain. Now worse after the rain.

My guess would be it all depends how good and how efficient the workers involved in these matters are and how financially reasonable it would be to the businesses coming into the city. A car on the lot won’t get sold if someone doesn’t try to sell it. A car on the lot won’t get sold if there isn’t anybody interested in it either.

Popeyes would be a good place to eat at, but why does it take so long for one business to come to san benito. Is it because elections are right around the corner that your trying to please “them”(citizens) to relecting you in office again. We haven’t forgot about the pot hole streets or the sewer smell that plagues the city.

The degree and extent to which some people go to to reply to simple statements concerning the mayor of San Benito and San Benito are absolutely hilarious.

No matter what point of view you may have, at the end of the day, whether it be a retail store, hotel, apt complex, restaurant, mom & pop shop, etc., bringing in business is, God willing, beneficial to the growth and bettering of San Benito. Do what you can. Inch by inch. Foot by foot. Yard by yard. Mile by mile. Whether a penny or a dollar, money is money. A poor hungry man cant be picky when it comes to green and purple grapes.

Crossfitters, gym rats. athletes, NFL players … I’ve all seen them munch fast food, candy, etc. And yet they are crossfitters, gym rats, athletes, NFL players. I’ve seen the richest and the poorest. I’ve seen the healthy and the not so healthy. Obesity, cancer, diabetes, sudden unfortunate death – it can happen to any and to all.

    Keep your perspective positive.

agree with the mayor that this helps grow San Benito, but what’s the cost? More obesity
    San Benito’s health? Yes

just because a company wants to make a few bucks? Absolutely and the mayor wants to get reelected.

don’t get me wrong, I love me some popeyes, but the way this guy tries to sell it… is this really the best investment for future of the city or its citizenry? No it’s not.

@ a time when national healthcare is all the buzz, doesn’t this go directly against that? Yes it does

also, something about “It’s a new place where THEY can go eat,” doesn’t sit right w/me. like he’s admitting he’s never going to eat there, but it’s fine for ‘them’ ..just sayin’ My sentiments exactly.

The mayor is referring to “the little people” in his kingdom.

Remember when he told the San Benito News that he was being dethroned by the city commission because he failed to pay his property taxes on time?

San Benito needs another restaurant like it needs another finance company or pawn shop.

    1. WE NEED A GOLD GYM IN TOWN TO BALANCE OUT WITH THE RESTAURANTS. JUST MORE PLACES FOR THE THE FOOD PATROL TO VISIT .

The Mayor said “they” because he’s not included. Haven’t you seen him at HEB and Walmart in HARLINGEN?? and THAT’s why we are the way we are. Even our Mayor doesn’t shop San Benito. Se sale!
