RIO HONDO – This was unexpected.
Hidalgo running back Chris Anderson rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns as the Pirates upended the Rio Hondo Bobcats 20-12 in a 32-3A district match at Bobcat Stadium.
After winning at La Feria last week, Rio Hondo is now 1-1 in district.
The Pirates scored on five plays on their opening possession on a two-yard TD from Anderson to go up 7-0.
The Cats answered when Eli Pitones notched a 10-yard touchdown run.
However, Hidalgo, a team that had struggled to start the year and has progressed some each week, got it back when Anderson recorded a 16-yard TD run for a 13-6 lead.
Rio Hondo closed to 13-12 on Marco Garate’s 50-yard scamper to make it 13-12.
The eventual-game clinching score came when Hidalgo saw Anderson rack up his third TD of the night, another two-yarder, with just over nine minutes left in the game for the final margin.
