Despite boasting unparalleled academic achievements throughout their San Benito High School careers, two friends who sit atop the graduating class have little in common.
To start, Anahi Garza, 17, and Dalia Alejandra Davila Simon, 19, share different philosophies about class ranking, stress and career paths. Anahi is the nervous one who aims to be the best while Dalia is the more calm and collected of the two who strives to do right by her standards. Still, it’s what the high school seniors do have in common that makes them unique: In short, they’re go-getters.
Anahi and Dalia proved it this year when they were named the 2013 SBHS Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively. The two are now scheduled to address the senior class during the graduation ceremony at 8 p.m. Friday, June 7, at Bobby Morrow Stadium.
While it’s something Anahi has long fought to accomplish, Dalia said it’s been nearly two years that she’s even given it much thought. Dalia said she spent little time concerning herself with rankings after learning she was 17th in her 10th grade class. “I was let down,” Dalia said. “But the next year I was ranked fifth, then fourth, and this year (Anahi) text me and said, ‘Congratulations. You’re the 2013 Salutatorian.’”
“I thought I was never going to be number one or the best,” Dalia continued, adding, “so I stopped thinking about ranking and just did my best.”
