RIO HONDO – The success of the San Benito Lady Hounds softball team has united the city of San Benito, but they have also managed to gain the support of the Rio Grande Valley Community, particularly Rio Hondo.
“Yes we will (support the Lady Hounds),” said Rio Hondo Mayor Gustavo Olivares. “We’re neighboring cities. We play in San Benito. They play in Rio Hondo at one point or another in junior softball. In the Pony League at one point or another we play together. I believe we’re there to support our neighboring cities.”
Such support comes after the Lady ’Hounds defeated Smithson Valley on Saturday to secure the Region IV championship and a trip to the state tournament, a feat no other Rio Grande Valley softball club has accomplished.
Olivares, who also happens to be the President of the Rio Hondo Youth Baseball and Softball League, said that he believes that the success of the Lady ’Hounds softball team is a good motivating factor for his young softball players.
