emergency-lightsTwo San Benito firefighters were seriously injured in an accident that occurred during the routine maintenance of one of the fire trucks, city officials confirmed Friday.

City Manager Manuel Lara said it was on April 10 that the firefighters in question, who have yet to be identified, were injured while conducting “preventive maintenance” work on a San Benito Fire Department vehicle.

“I do know that it was pretty serious,” Lara said of the injuries sustained. “They were doing basic maintenance on their equipment on one of the vehicles.

According to Lara, the firefighters were injured when a valve they were working on “popped.”

“Apparently they were checking a valve that was still producing pressure, and before they knew it the valve they were doing preventive maintenance on loosened and popped, causing injuries to the firefighters.”

The city manager said emergency medical technicians rushed to the scene of the incident, the location of which has also yet to be confirmed, to treat the injured firefighters.
