San Benito runners advance to area

HoundsThe San Benito Greyhound and Lady Greyhound varsity track teams competed at the District 31-5A track meet at PSJA Stadium on Thursday, April 11, and Saturday, April 13.

Placing seventh in the discus with a throw of 91’6” was San Benito’s Rebecca Hartman; running 12:02.1 in the 3200 meter run was Brenda Lopez, who placed sixth. Scoring a third place finish with a time of 1:00.58 in the 400 meter dash was Viviana Abrego; placing second in the shot put with a throw of 34’ 11 and a half inches was Jacqueline Elizondo. In the 4×100 meter relay, San Benito placed third with a time of 0:51.37. Rosa Gomez of San Benito placed seventh in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 0:51.01, and coming in at second in the high jump with a leap of 5’ was Kailha Reyes.

Abrego won first place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:25.39 while Sosa placed third in the 200 meter dash, clocking in at 0:26.46. Sosa then placed second and Kristen Rodriguez scored fifth in the long jump with leaps of 17’ 5 and a half inches and 15’ 9 and half inches, respectively. Fourth place was secured by Veronica De Leon in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 0:16.87 while Melizza Duncan and San Juana Garcia placed seventh and eighth, respectively, with times of 0:17.64 and 0:18.19.

Sosa was the triple jump first place finisher with 35’6” and Gomez hit fourth with 33’2”. Sosa also placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 0:12.84. San Benito then placed fifth in the 4×400 meter relay with a time of 4:15.52 and seventh in the 4×200 meter relay with a time of 1:55.26. Earning seventh place in the pole vault was Aleene De Leon with a 8’6” vault.

The team placed third overall with 92 points behind McAllen Rowe (96) and Weslaco High (170).

Rafael Duenes placed fourth in the 3200 meter run and qualified for area with a time of 10.03.45. Isaac Osorio, Armando Medrano, Gabriel Vasquez and Joshua Alonzo placed fourth in the 400 meter relay and qualified for area with a time of 44.16.

Gabriel Noyola qualified for the area competition after placing second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.07. John Allen ran a time of 2.28.66 in the 800 meter run. Julian Vasquez placed sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.45.

Jonathan Guzman qualified for area after placing fourth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.52. Gabriel Noyola placed first in the 300 meter hurdles and qualified for area with a time of 41.35. Jamail Garza ran a time of 23.49 in the 200 meter dash.

Rafael Duenes placed fifth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4.37.50 while Aaron Garcia ran a time of 4.48.85. Jacob Flores, Armando Medrano, Jonathan Guzman and Gabriel Vasquez placed third in the 1600 meter relay and qualified for area with a time of 3.31.96.

Jamail Garza, Armando Medrano, Jonathan Guzman and Gabriel Vasquez placed second in the 800 meter relay and qualified for area with a time of 1.32.47.

Enrique Rodriguez threw 42’1” in the shot put while Frank Garza threw 38’6”. Dylan Castillo placed sixth in the discus with a throw of 123’7” while Frank Garza threw 110’11” and Enrique Rodriguez threw 108’6”.

Brandon Huerta vaulted 12’0” in the pole vault. Nate Mireles jumped 38’3 1/2” in the triple jump while Juan Torres jumped 38’2”. Juan Torres jumped 17’1” in the long jump. Jason Lopez jumped 5’8” in the high jump while Matthew Perez jumped 5’6”.

The team, coached by Rolando Casas, placed fourth with a total of 66 points behind McAllen Memorial (81), PSJA Memorial (118.5) and Weslaco East (133).
