The San Benito High School chess team secured a state championship for the second straight year at last weekend’s state chess tournament in McAllen. Many other local campuses also qualified for the National Chess Tournaments scheduled in Tennessee next month. SBHS took last year’s Texas Scholastic Chess Championship Tournament in Dallas.
Individually, SBHS senior Simon Vasquez III tied for first place in state this year.
Also earning top rankings was the Miller Jordan Middle School chess team, which placed second in state, and the Berta Cabaza Middle School chess team, which earned third place in state. According to a press release, MJMS missed the state title by a single point.
