What’s the best way to get over a stinging loss?
Scoring 20 runs is a good place to start. Being tied for first place and getting good news on an injured player are even better.
After suffering their first district loss this season on Monday, the San Benito Greyhounds baseball team bounced back in a big way with a 20-1 win over Weslaco East on Wednesday. They closed out the week Friday night at home against a good McHi club for their third game of a busy Spring Break week, losing 14-0.
Four errors and 11 walks did the ’Hounds in against the Raiders, most coming after a concerning injury to infielder Josh Huerta, who was hit in the eye by a one-hopper. Though they fought back late and pounded out 13 hits on the night, the ’Hounds never recovered from losing their teammate and fell 13-6.
But all of that was history on Wednesday night.
Against East, freshman Mando Medrano belted a grand slam and Chris Padilla added a solo shot as the ’Hounds surged to a 10-1 lead. The boys added 10 more runs in the sixth inning and the game was called after the Wildcats were stumped down 20-1.
“We had a bunch of hits and we got to play a lot of our guys,” San Benito skipper Ram Partida said of the lopsided win. “I’m not one of those coaches who wants to stick it to anyone. We played a lot of our backups and at one point we had seven freshmen or sophomores on the field. That’s the exciting part of it is the talent we have coming up.”
With the win, the ’Hounds improved to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in 31-5A. They received some help from Weslaco High the same night as the Panthers beat first-place PSJA North, the team who beat San Benito. That created a three-way tie for first place in District 31-5A heading into Friday night’s action.
Perhaps above all of this, Partida said the club got some good news concerning Huerta, who was hit in the face by that hard shot against PSJA North. Huerta, who left the game, fractured the orbital bone around one of his eyes and the prognosis was unclear. Some feared surgery was a possibility.
However, Partida said Huerta has been “medically cleared” this week by doctors and will not require surgery. He’s eligible to return to the lineup and the coach said he will take his time to make sure Huerta is recovered and ready to go.
Meanwhile, after the long Spring Break week, San Benito continues district play next Tuesday night against the PSJA Bears. They’re idle in district on Friday and will face the Edinburg Bobcats in a non-district affair. The first round of district play wraps up March 26 when the ’Hounds take on the Weslaco Panthers.
