San Benito makes playoffs as Bears hibernate against ’Hounds

The San Benito Greyhound varsity basketball team faced one final hurdle in the road to the playoffs as they squared off with the PSJA Bears at home Tuesday.

The annual Greyhound Basketball Parents’ Night only added to the excitement. Fresh from the festivities, the ’Hounds arrived on the court with their game faces on, ready to make their parents proud.

In the first quarter, the Bears held the lead, but at 4:01 a jumper by Greyhound Jaime Sanchez tied up the score, followed by a one-shot foul by San Benito’s Jason Lopez to take the lead. With 19 seconds left, PSJA regained the leads and the first quarter ended with a score of 9-8 in favor of the Bears.

The second quarter was al about defense. But at 4:14, Mathew Perez of San Benito was even knocked off his feet mid-shot just as the ball reached its destination and tied the score. A slew of foul-shots for the Greyhounds gave them a four-point lead at 2:14 – a lead the ’Hounds did not relinquish the rest of the game.

It was then Middle School Basketball Recognition Night during halftime, and future Greyhound b-ballers from all three San Benito middle schools – Berta Cabaza, Miller Jordan and Riverside – were recognized.

Beginning the third quarter with a score of 20-17, San Benito was desperate to expand the lead. The first Greyhound three-pointer of the night gave San Benito the first 10-point lead of either team at 5:35, causing the Bears to take a timeout to regroup and plan how best to counter the string of six consecutive, unanswered Greyhound points. The plotting was to no avail, however, as the ’Hounds continued to score three-pointer after three-pointer, finishing the third quarter with a 13-point lead as the buzzer sounded and that much closer to the playoffs.

The fourth quarter ended with a final score of 55-41, and Greyhound head basketball coach Eddie Abrego commented that the team was in “full motion” in preparation for the playoffs. “The kids thrive on defense, and they’re ready to clinch third in district (31-5A),” Abrego said. “They’re in the right mindset, and they are hungry.”

Abrego credited the community for its continued support of the team and encouraged fans to attend Tuesday’s game in Weslaco, slated at 7:30 p.m., in preparation for the team’s playoff run.
