HARLINGEN – Twelve-year-old Alyssa Dale of Harlingen has a goal. By mid-February, she plans to raise at least $1,000 for the Jump Rope for Heart campaign, an annual event benefiting the American Heart Association.

Speaking of various acquaintances and relatives who she said experienced various heart conditions, including heart attacks, Alyssa – accompanied to the San Benito News Monday by her mother Evelon Dale – said her efforts were inspired by their stories.

This is not the first time Alyssa has decided to give her time to a worthwhile cause. In fact, 2013 marks her third consecutive year participating in the campaign.

“Jump Rope for Heart helps raise money for research to help loved ones and others,” Alyssa said. “The money raised is used to learn new treatments.”

Of course, Alyssa does more than just jump rope on a designated day. As of Monday, she’s collected $375.00 – nearly half her goal – by soliciting door-to-door and incorporating other fundraising techniques.

“I’m really proud to be a part of the Jump Rope for Heart program to save lives,” Alyssa further remarked, adding, “and I’m dedicating my efforts to baby Hudson Woods.”

Hudson Woods is the son of Mike Woods, the youth pastor at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Harlingen, where Alyssa and Evelon attend religious services.

Mike messaged the News via Facebook on Friday and said his son Hudson was born with a heart condition in which he’s currently receiving treatment for in Houston.

“He is still currently in Houston waiting on his second out of three heart surgeries,” Mike said of baby Hudson. “(I’m) honored that Alyssa would think of him.”
