A new development in the shooting death of a Rio Hondo High School senior has landed his relative accused of firing the weapon in the custody of the Darrell B. Hester Juvenile Justice Center in San Benito.

According to Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio, the investigation into the death of 18-year-old Ricky Ramos, Jr of Las Yescas has resulted in a manslaughter charge for his 13-year-old cousin, the alleged shooter.

“Well, investigators talked to (the suspect) and what he said is that the .22 caliber rifle had a scope,” said Lucio. “He was shooting birds at the time when he saw (Ramos) working outside. He looked through the scope, pointed the rifle at (Ramos) thinking it was empty, pulled trigger and killed him.”

As reported in the January 2 edition of the San Benito News, Ramos was transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center where he later succumbed to a gunshot wound to the head.

Lucio stressed the importance of safety when handling firearms.

“You can never be too sure if the weapon is completely empty,” Lucio said. “Always make sure you remove all the cartridges from the weapon and never point it at anybody.”
