San Benito police arrested a man for intoxication assault after allegedly fleeing the scene of an accident involving two children.
According to a press release, police were dispatched to the 800 block of South Sam Houston Boulevard at approximately 11:53 p.m. on Tuesday, January 1, in reference to a vehicle accident.
“Police officers arrived and discovered that a vehicle had struck another vehicle from behind at the traffic light and left the area south on Sam Houston,” stated Michael Galvan, assistant operations chief of the San Benito Police Department, in a press release. “The victim described the suspect vehicle as being a 1999 or 2000 model white Chevrolet truck.”
The victim and her two children, ages seven and eight, were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Meanwhile, police received information from the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department in reference to a possible suspect in custody at the 700 block of East Hudson Road. “A San Benito police officer went to this location where he saw the described suspect truck with front end damage,” said Galvan.
The suspect was identified as 62-year-old Juan Machuca. Reports further indicate that Machuca’s wife had sustained a severe laceration to her forehead, which was bleeding profusely as a result of the accident.
“The officer also noticed that Mr. Machuca was highly intoxicated and admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages at a local establishment and did remember the accident but blamed the other driver,” said Galvan.
Machuca was arrested on four counts of intoxication assault for the three victims involved in the accident as well as his wife. He was arraigned and received a total of $40,000 in bonds, $10,000 per count. He is currently incarcerated at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito.
