The San Benito Greyhounds varsity basketball team is scheduled to go up against the PSJA Memorial Wolverines this Saturday as they vie for second place in District 31-5A.
With a season record of 12-7 and a district record of 2-2, Head Coach Eddie Abrego is confident that his Greyhounds are up to the task of taking on the Wolverines, who are 3-1 in district. “We have some outstanding scorers like Matt Perez and Jason Lopez, but our defense has been especially strong and tough,” Abrego said. “So we’re relying on our hard-pressure style of defense to help us win this.”
That defense will undoubtedly be tested as the varsity game against the Wolverines will determine who goes home in second place in 31-5A and under district leader Nikki Rowe. Abrego said, “We have high expectations for our boys, so we concentrate on how to win instead of what happens if we lose.”
The game, slated at the San Benito High School Gym at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 29, promises to be an exciting match-up as both teams have much to fight for. “Our kids have been working so hard, and many of them are experienced, so we’d like our fans to come out and give the guys some attention for the good work that they do,” Abrego said.
The junior varsity squad plays before the varsity team at 2 p.m., and Abrego urges the community to come out and support both teams.
