The traditional Christmas Parade and Bazaar in San Benito this Saturday will bring the downtown to a lighted wonderland amid colorful yuletide decorations, novelty and religious floats, performances by musical groups, tasty dishes ranging from tripas tacos to funnel cakes, and good wholesome fun.
San Benito Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Longest Lighted Christmas Parade will begin at 6 p.m. in downtown San Benito on Sam Houston Blvd.
The Christmas Bazaar is scheduled Saturday, Dec. 8, between Batts and Reagan Streets in downtown San Benito from 3-11 p.m.
Participating parade entries will be judged on “A Neon Christmas” theme, with prize money and awards to be presented in three places in each of the categories, including novelty floats and religious floats, according to event organizers. First place winners will win $125, second place will receive $75, and third place is a $50 cash prize.
Deadline to submit parade entry applications is Dec. 5 at 4:30 p.m. at the San Benito Municipal Annex, (old WIC building) at 400 N. Travis. Entries may consist of floats, walking groups, marching bands, car clubs with vintage/modified vehicles and horse clubs. Entry fee for floats and motorized vehicles is $35 and walking groups are $25 each.
The bazaar will be highlighted Saturday at 4 p.m. with a performance by the San Benito High School Jazz Band, followed by a performance of the Mariachi.
The Student Estudiantina will perform at 5 p.m. with the Conjunto Band to perform at 6:30 p.m. After the award-winning San Benito High School Marching Band concludes its participation in the Christmas Parade, the Veterans Memorial Ninth Grade Academy Honors Band will perform, followed by the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble. The San Benito High School Band has been named the Grand Marshals of the Parade in honor of their successful year in competitions and performances on the state level.
Food and drink concessions, as well as arts and crafts booth space for the bazaar before and after the Christmas Parade, are also available. The bazaar is sponsored by the San Benito Special Events Board.
Applications will be accepted weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-noon and from 1-4:30 p.m. Non-profits groups and commercial establishments are welcome. Cost per concession is $50. Applications can be downloaded from the city’s website at www.cityofsanbenito.com.
