Little Greyhounds head to San Antonio

San Benito will be sending its midgets to the Texas Youth Football Association semifinals in San Antonio on Saturday.

The Little Greyhounds, comprised of kids ages 6-7, compete in TYFA’s midget division and have made it all the way to the fourth round, thus earning the squad a trip to San Antonio on Dec. 1.

The team is currently 10-2 this season losing only to La Feria and Raymondville, both teams that were undefeated at the time. That is until the Little Greyhounds later redeemed themselves by defeating said teams, 7-6 over La Feria and 14-13 over Raymondville.

Now, San Benito is set to face another undefeated team, the South Texas Mudd Doggs, in the semis. The game is set for 4 p.m.

Currently, San Benito’s TYFA team is accepting donations to help fund the trip. Such travel expenses will go to cover food, gas, car rentals and hotel accommodations, according to Noe Zavala, head coach.

“We need your help with our upcoming event,” Zavala said via email in hopes of encouraging the community to benefit the team’s cause. “We’d appreciate a donation of any amount to help these boys make way to a fun learning experience for them. Your donation will help us achieve our goal for this fundraiser and bring the best of smiles on these 6- and 7-year-old faces.”

Zavala said individuals’ donations will be publicly acknowledged at future promotional events and announcements.

Gonzalez, Leonard Machuca, Mariano Garcia, John Silva, Nova Bejaran, Devin Silva, Karmyne Castilleja, Alroy Martinez, Michael Martinez, Jay Velez, Gene Pequeño, Joel Olvera, Vincent Munoz, Chris Thraikill and Danthony Mireles.

Including Zavala, coaches are Diego Silva, M.R Garcia, Keeton Castilleja and Bernie Muñoz.
