PHARR – The San Benito Greyhounds are 4-4 this season even though they’ve outscored opponents by a total of 147 points to 119.
In each contest in 31-5A, relatively new stomping grounds for the ’Hounds, San Benito has been competitive and downright dominant on the defensive side of the ball. While the offense has left much to be desired, San Benito has shown flares of brilliance; those instances, however, have been few and far between.
“Obviously, we know we’re a good football team, have been a good football team and are still a good football team, but we’re in a very tough district as all our opponents are very good and very capable,” Greyhounds Head Coach Spencer Gantt said Tuesday. “It just comes down to a few mistakes that haven’t put us over the hump. The theme is to finish. We’ve gotta finish plays, drives and games. Every single game has come down to the wire.”
The purple and gold pride of San Benito has lost four games by deficits of six, five and in two instances just one point. In fact, it could be argued that the ’Hounds are 14 points away from being undefeated this season.
But it’s a little more complicated than that.
Now, San Benito faces another 31-5A opponent that was initially considered a potential district title contender: the PSJA Bears. Even though PSJA, coming into this game at 1-6, has had its struggles this year, this is still a team who’s starting quarterback was knocked out of a game weeks ago and happens to be returning Thursday, when the Bears host the ’Hounds.
“With their quarterback returning, they’re a very dangerous football team,” Gantt said of the Bears. “They’re going to come out and have some new life with that quarterback back, and we just gotta play good football and get after it.”
Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, at PSJA Stadium in Pharr.

TO FINISH? TO TERMINATE TO USE OR DISPOSE OF. NOT TO MANY POSITIVE SENTENCES YOU CAN USE WITH THE WORD FINISH AND TO USE IT IN A MOTIVATIVE MANNER IN FOOTBALL IS BEHOND ME. EVERY TEAM FINISHES . IT IS INEVITABLE.
I HAVE EVEN SEEN FOOTBALL TEAMS LOSEING AND WHEN IT COMES TO THE FOURTH QUARTER THE TEAM RAISES UP THEIR HANDS UP IN THE AIR AND SINGLE WITH THIER FOUR FINGERS INDICATEING IT’S THE FOUR QUATER. GO FIGURE YOU’D THINK THEY’D BE WHISHING IT WAS THE FIRST QT AND NOT THE FOURTH..
i have to agree with jesus,if the offense would score some points, then the defense wouldnt have to be on the field so much, plus a few boneheaded plays called by gnantt. and whats this “were in a tougher district”? the cards were able to go undefeated several years there.plus the fact gnantt said during the realignment it doesnt matter where they put us well win ,bet he doesnt remember saying that . i feel for the kids in all honesty cuz they had the size and the experience and i know there better than my cards this year.your just lacking the offensive coaching cuz u had all the tools and esp the defense, geuss evens still has some majic left in them old bones
well the way you are coaching we are going to come out short the bears is going to be 2-and 6
