If there was any doubt as to the tenacity of these San Benito Greyhounds, they were blown away along with the PSJA North Raiders on Friday night at Bobby Morrow Stadium. The ’Hounds put a thorough beatdown on the Raiders, winning by a score of 30-12 to remain unbeaten at home this year.

San Benito came out of the gates with reckless abandonment, taking their first drive 75 yards for a score with Arturo Coronado punching it in from 6 yards out. PSJA North looked to have an easy way to a score after a bad kickoff and a 15-yard-penalty set up the Raiders deep in Greyhound territory. San Benito defensive back Nate Mireles had a different idea, charging towards the ball carrier and stripping the ball right out of his hands. It was a play that set the tone for the rest of the game.

The Raiders were able to put one in the endzone but had their extra point blocked, making it a 7-6 Greyhound lead. Edson Ybarra chipped in a short field goal before the half ended to make it 10-6.

The Raiders appeared ready to make it a game, taking their first drive in the second half all the way down to the 7-yard line before stalling. By stalling, they ran into a brick wall colored purple and gold.

The Greyhound D kept PSJA North out of the endzone despite the Raiders having first down inside the 10-yard line.

The much-maligned San Benito offense had a performance to be proud of. Especially the 91-yard scoring drive they put together capped off with a second touchdown by the workhorse Coronado.

To have a complete game, special teams also needs to perform well, another blocked punt and two blocked extra points says the Greyhounds have that third component.

Coronado added on yet another score, this one from 54 yards out to make the final, Greyhounds 30, PSJA North 12.

Greyhound Head Coach Spencer Gantt understands how important a district win would be in such a tough district. “Any time we can get a win in this district is big, our goal is to win out and hopefully still have a shot at that district title,” said Gantt. “The motto from here on out is all in.”

Great effort by the offense….things look to be working on all cylinders now! Keep it up guys…….remember a district crown is great, but a great run into the playoffs is what separates the men from the boys!!
