HARLINGEN – After last week’s 49-7 victory over Brownsville Lopez, the Los Fresnos Falcons were set to face another 32-5A undefeated team, the Harlingen Cardinals.
Sure, the perennial power Cards were shown to be human this year after dropping two games. But the birds went head to head Friday night at Boggus Stadium with a feisty Falcons squad that came to fight. And fight they did.
Los Fresnos got up quickly on Harlingen with a 14-0 lead before the first quarter ended.
Wide receiver Jaime Mata brought in yet another touchdown bringing the Falcons up, 21-0. The Cardinals put a few points on the score board, before the end of the second quarter, bringing the game to 21-7 with 37 seconds left before halftime.
But you can’t count out Harlingen as the Cardinals clawed back to score, making it 21-14. By this time, Harlingen had scored 14 unanswered points.
Nick Alegria, defensive back for the Falcons, came away with an interception, giving the ball back to the Falcons.
Falcon quarterback Jonmichael Rosales and Mata proved to be quite the dynamic duo after the two connected for another touchdown toss, bringing Los Fresnos up 28-14 toward the end of the third quarter.
Brandon Vasquez brought in another touchdown for the Cardinals, making it 28-23 Falcons after Harlingen got in a field goal.
The Cards went for a 2-point conversion and Los Fresnos intercepted the play.
Running back William Cox then hit paydirt on a touchdown scamper late in the fourth quarter, making the final score 35-23 in favor of Los Fresnos.
Harlingen now drops to 2-3 on the season and 2-1 in district play. The Falcons, meanwhile, are 5-1 overall and 4-0 in district – making Los Fresnos one of two 32-5A teams to remain undefeated.
The other being the Harlingen South Hawks.
Los Fresnos is set to face the Pace Vikings, who have a 0-5 record, on October 19 at Sams Stadium in Brownsville.
