City to spray for mosquitoes

MosquitoA city-wide attempt to control the mosquito population will take effect next week.

According to city officials in the department of code enforcement, controlling the mosquito population can be a year-round effort. “During the summer months, after what some refer to as April showers or any time it rains heavily, we start spraying about 48 hours after the rain settles,” said Code Enforcement Director John Rodriguez.

According to Rodriguez, it has been over six months since the city has needed to spray for mosquitoes. This is due, at least in part, to drought. Mosquito dunks, little discs which are placed in standing water to create a film that eliminates mosquito larvae, have been utilized to alleviate the need of incessant spraying. “These have been pretty effective,” Rodriguez stated of the mosquito dunks.

Rodriguez seemed happy to report that there is no threat of the mosquito-borne West Nile virus reported in San Benito at this time.
