LA JOYA – Last Friday’s sweet taste of victory against Santa Rosa Warriors (27-13) was short lived for the Rio Hondo Bobcats as they fell Thursday to the La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Huskies, 21-20.

After a hand off at his own 16 yardline, running back Hernan Guerrero of the Bobcats aimed for the end zone and turned on his jets, hitting paydirt with an 84 yard run as well as the first touchdown for the night. This put the Bobcats up 6-0.

After a play like Guerrero’s, many fans relaxed in the stands and figured this match would be a piece of cake. They were wrong.

Quarterback Ramiro Garza of Juarez-Lincoln fought back and took the lead just before halftime, bringing the Huskies up 7-6.

Rio Hondo headed into the second half of the game Thursday with six points, but that wasn’t going to cut it for quarterback Juan Puga.

With one minute left on the clock in the third quarter, Puga ran for a touchdown. Then Gilbert Mendoza, wide receiver for the Bobcats, tied up the game 14-14 late in the fourth quarter with a smooth break from the Huskies to the end zone.

In the 4th quarter and only 3:24 left on the clock, Garza scored and elevated the Huskies to a 21-14 score.

Sergio Perez, wide receiver for the Bobcats, caught a 49 yard pass for the touchdown. The score now stood at 21-20. After a failed attempt for the two-point conversion, the game ended in disappointing fashion for the black and gold. Rio Hondo Head Coach Rocky James said, “We went for a two point conversion for the win, but we didn’t get it. However, I think we played really well tonight.”

The ’Cats are home next Friday as the Sinton Pirates will come to town. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bobcats Stadium.

  1. Rio Hondo Bobcats failed the two point conversion as much as they would have as a team if they would not have gone for two points. The result of tieing the game and going for the win was over whelmed by the comparison of teaching your team how to chanllange them selves to become true champoins. To lay it all on the line is the calling of true winners.
