Just hours before a scheduled city meeting set to address the adoption of a property tax hike, reporters hit the streets Tuesday to find out how every-day citizens in the community feel about a tax which could mean another $.04 of taxation per $100 of property.
San Benito resident Lupita Potter, 65, said, “Taxes are high enough as it is. People can’t afford that. It’s ridiculous…. I’ve seen people using city vehicles to go and buy beer, yet they want to increase our taxes.”
As previously reported by the San Benito News in the Aug. 19 weekend edition, the proposed San Benito property tax hike could be as high as 4.4 percent. If passed, the surplus of tax revenues collected, city officials said, will be used to provide for road improvements throughout the city.
Araceli Lopez, 27, of San Benito, said, “If they increase [property taxes], at least I could see the streets fixed, so I think they [city officials] should increase taxes.”

Looks like the politicos are getting ready for the BIG STEAL with this new found in road paving! This is a common way for hide inferior work and provide kickbacks to local government officials!
San Benito, some of your politicians are fools. Haven’t they been trying to fix the streets for years? Shouldn’t there be some evidence that streets have been repaired with previous allocated money that has been set aside? What i’m worried about i whether Mayor Joe “PUT MY NAME ON THAT PLAQUE” Hernandez can pay HIS TAXES if the city raised them?! Next thing you know the mayor and Mr. “Mathis leftovers” Lara will want to invest in $100,000 worth of lottery tickets to “improve streets”! I mean lets face it….. the tax increase idea or lottery ticket purchase idea probably have the same chance of actually fixing all those streets!!!!
I hope the school district doesn’t raise taxes. Here is some information everyone should know:
Hector Leal – pays taxes
Oscar Medrano- pays taxes
Ana Cruz- pays taxes
June Aguilera- doesn’t pay taxes
Fatima Huerta- doesn’t pay taxes
Yliana Rodriguez- doesn’t pay taxes
Julian Huerta- doesn’t pay taxes
source: Cameron County Tax Office
To Rodeo: What? Four school board members do not pay taxes… and your source is Cameron County Tax Office??? What?? You have to be kidding, right?
These people want to raise MY TAXES and THEY DO NOT PAY TAXES!
Someone has some explaining to do…….
This should have been a two-part question!
Question 1: Are you a property owner who pays property taxes? If yes, how do you feel about paying extra property taxes for funding street repairs?
Question 2: If not a property owner, is it fair that only property tax payers are being forced to fund the street repairs when everybody drives on the streets!
