City moves forward with project

City of San BenitoOn Monday, San Benito city officials met with the Economic Development Corporation in a joint meeting to discuss current plans for the renovation or relocation of the city’s museums, which include the San Benito Historical Museum, the Freddy Fender Museum and the Texas Conjunto Hall of Fame and Music Museum.

The City of San Benito will apply to receive an additional $1 million in federal grant money as part of the project to build the cultural arts center at Plaza San Benito, which currently houses the San Benito Museums inside the Community Building at 210 E. Heywood, as well as the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center (old library) at 225 E. Stenger.

This is addition of the $1.2 million that were earmarked for the project back in 2007. The city will contribute 20 percent, or $200,000.
