The recent resignation of Alma Colleli as the San Benito Economic Development Corporation director has sparked concern over the completion of the Cultural Heritage Museum Project, which she previously spearheaded.

The project, started just under five years ago, is in the final planning stages, and Colleli has been an instrumental part, said Rey Avila, president of the Texas Conjunto Hall of Fame and Museum.

With $1.2 million allocated by the city’s EDC, Colleli worked closely with the San Benito Cultural & Heritage Commission to submit paperwork for additional monies for a grant.

  1. Alma Colleli was always very impartial in her EDC dealings. She was a hard working and dedicated individual. But maybe Alma saw the handwriting on the wall. I hate to think which “compadre” the Joe Hernandez regime will replace her with. And speaking of EDC, how much did the 10 best practices for effective boards workshop cost the city? This workshop was well attended by all boards and city manager and 2 commissioners: Rene Villafranco and Tony Gonzales, but not Mayor Joe Hernandez or commissioners JD Penny and Joe D. Gonzalez. The workshop presentor made many references to the EDC, but EDC president, Pete Claudio wasn’t present either. The biggest and most powerful board, and its president wasn’t even there. He was at a school board workshop where school insurance was discussed. Could this mean he was trying to take care of personal business instead of taking care of EDC business? Who knows? But the Mayor and EDC president missed an important workshop that the tax payers probably paid for. Shame on them for missing it. Good Luck Alma, you will be an asset to any business that hires you.
