film shoot in Rio Hondo2RIO HONDO – In what is usually characterized as a “sleepy little town,” Rio Hondo was abuzz on Saturday with talk of Hollywood film crews and high profile celebs being in town over the weekend.

The town’s vertical lift bridge, the only one of its kind in the state, was used as the setting for a scene in a movie featuring Robert Duvall. The bridge, which was also once an essential route in Cameron County, was closed all day Saturday as a result.

The film crew for the movie, “A Night in Old Mexico,” began setting up around 10 a.m. and reportedly stayed until 10 p.m. Cast, extras and directors could all be seen from Colorado Avenue down the main strip of Rio Hondo. Props for the movie included vehicles with the words “Federalia Policia” and “Border Patrol” displayed on the sides as well as a Mexican bridge toll booth and a stop sign that, in Spanish, read “alto.”
