He swears, “It all came from the fields.”

That’s the sentiment of Roel Sandoval Flores, a local artist whose work was on display at the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center in San Benito on Thursday.

At his exhibit, Flores said his art is inspired by his migrant work and his days as a conjunto musician.

Flores was candid at the exhibit, sharing the background of his artwork and the meaning behind the symbolism.

Flores was born in 1942 in Weslaco and attended school until the seventh grade. Recalling the difficulties of growing up as a minority during different times, Flores said, “I regret quitting school, but I couldn’t handle the discrimination growing up.”
