Up for review at Wednesday’s meeting of the San Benito Civil Service Commission was a proposed amendment to the Civil Service rules for police officers and firefighters to expand the pool of those eligible for inner-department promotions, this after all applicants who’ve recently tested have yet to pass their exams.

The City of San Benito’s testing system for promotion currently states that an individual must maintain at least two years in their current position before applying for a promotion. Each promotion requires passing an examination on a specified date set by the department, and at least three qualified candidates must test for the position.

At present, qualified candidates are scarce. Both the police and fire departments are experiencing an applicant-to-failure ratio so great, action to amend this policy is being pursued.

Sad…instead of pushing city employees to improve on their end and, ultimately, be a better, more intelligent, savvy, educated person, the city takes the lazy way and wants to lower the benchmark. Way to set an example for the future. “No need to excel in school, just ‘get by’ and with your limited intellect you can become an employee for the City of San Benito! Requirements now lowered!”
