An elderly San Benito man was rushed to the hospital Thursday after he was attacked by bees and suffered from as many as 500 stings.

Detective Rogelio Banda of the San Benito Police Department said in a news release that an 88-year-old man was attacked at 2:17 p.m. while crushing cans at his daughter’s house on the 100 block of Lakeview North.

Banda reported that the man then drove to his home, located on the 400 block of E. Expressway 83, before contacting emergency medical services.

According to medical personnel, the victim is expected to recover despite being stung over 500 times. “He was stung numerous times in the face and arms,” Banda said of the victim’s injuries. “It was pretty bad, but he’s expected to survive.”

The detective also said that the victim will be hospitalized overnight for observation.

Meanwhile, San Benito firefighters responded to the house on Lakeview North to destroy the bees using a soap and water solution.

“The soap and water suffocates them (bees) and unfortunately does kill them, but from what I understand they were pretty aggressive,” said Raul Zuniga, operations chief for the San Benito Fire Department.
