For as long as she can remember, Dolly Martinez Barrera recalls receiving a phone call every year from the staff at Dolly Vinsant Memorial Hospital in San Benito.
Barrera was asked to don an Army Air Corps uniform similar to the one worn by Wilma “Dolly” Vinsant, the wartime nurse and World War II casualty whom the hospital was named after. The idea was to get Barrera to pose next to Vinsant’s portrait for a photo, which was often published in the San Benito News at the time.
Honored, Barrera obliged the request every year until she was 6; after all, it was just another day in the life of Baby Dolly.
You see, Barrera was also named after Vinsant, and for good reason – she was the first female born in the hospital.
