cloudsA low pressure weather system swirling near the Gulf is expected to become a tropical depression by the end of the weekend, according to meteorologists at the Brownsville station of the National Weather Service.

The weather system, currently near the Yucatan Peninsula, has a 70 percent likelihood of becoming a depression and entering the Gulf of Mexico.

“We are keeping an eye on it because it will eventually be in the Gulf,” said Maria Torres, a meteorologist with the weather service.

Torres said the storm will likely escalate beyond a depression, but she said much is still uncertain about the system.
