The national waiting time for a kidney is estimated over 1,200 days, according to new statistics. In the Rio Grande Valley, where the need for kidneys is about 91 percent of the organs needed, that wait could be even longer.
Among those on the list is Victor Blanco, a San Benito man who suffers from kidney failure. The delay – now two years long – isn’t slowing him down. In fact, the 28-year-old is maintaining his health while on dialysis and promoting organ donation with the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA).
“What made me get involved with TOSA was the fact that a lot of my friends did not know about organ donation,” said Blanco. “I want to change the attitudes of many people here in the Valley about becoming an organ donor because you can save up to eight lives!”
