WEB EXCLUSIVE: Commission votes to replace plaque with one recognizing Hernandez

NEWS Staff Report

City of San BenitoThe San Benito City Commission voted to replace the plaque at the Veterans War Memorial with a new marker recognizing Joe H. Hernandez as mayor instead of Jack Garcia.

It was in September 2011 when Hernandez’s request for a plaque replacement was not approved. Hernandez argued then that he had wanted the plaque to be historically accurate since, while Garcia was mayor when the marker was installed in February 2011, Hernandez had been reelected mayor by the time the memorial was formally dedicated in July and wished for the plaque to reflect as much.

Both Hernandez and Garcia have long disagreed as to the motivations behind replacing the plaque, but the commission put the issue to rest Tuesday evening by voting unanimously to replace the marker with one recognizing Hernandez as mayor. It’s been reported that $400 in private donations would go toward the cost of a new plaque.

Yes Maria, tell us exactly what your are happy about, and be specific.

Please, tell us what arm of the Armed Forces did Joe serve to deserve his name on the wall of a memorial for War Veterans.

The only negative in this whole mess is the negative publicity that Joe and his cabal are generating for the city of San Benito.!

Maria, What big project would you like the major and city commisoners start and finish? Challange them to earn thier names carved in stone for everyone to remember them by . Make them send out a message to prove all these negative speakers wrong and make them eat thier words.

Maybe the city should invest in a voteing machine. Let the people of the city decide when there are issues that may be controversial when there is no policy. At first maybe only the familes and friends will vote in favor or against, but as citizens catch on more and more will come to vote. Just a thought. I guess the peope the citizens vote into office have the last word. O well thats just the order of society I can live with it. The decison to change the name on the plaque is not going to do much for he city. Hope this is a start to a good fixing projects mission. If I could see this administration fix the cities drainage problems it would be a citizens wish come true. Take on the big problems and get busy doing something for the citizens and it town. God bless and good luck.

Have you noticed how the mayors supporters and voters have been very quiet and are not here commenting on their support for him?. I guess they too are not happy with these shenanigans. What else did they expect?

This, voters of San Benito, is what “petty politics” is all about!

Politician’s priorities are so screwed up!

Priority is not about the citizens, blighted neighborhoods, crappy streets, flooded streets throughout the city, etc.; it is about gigantic egos and how to massage them!

Priority is certainly not about the city “violating” the current City Charter Section 8.02 (a) Conflicts of Interest.

Per this section, which has been in existence for a very, very long time, the city should have implemented a Conflicts of Interest or Ethics Ordinance. The city was informed in January of this year that the city was violating the City Charter by not enacting said ordinance.

However, “petty politics” and “satisfying hurt egos” take priority over adhering to the City Charter.

BTW, I thought the “SAN BENITO VETERANS WAR MEMORIAL” was intended to be a memorial to “war veterans” and not a memorial to the politicians in or out of office.

And we wonder why we can’t attract the type or caliber of businesses that the City of Harlingen regularly attracts. Businesses who exercise their due diligence before investing in a city are not impressed with “petty politics”!

As a result it is the taxpayers who lose.

But, at least the plaque is now “historically correct”!

I feel so much better now! Sarcastically speaking, of course!

The plaque should have remained the same. Hernandez was not the Mayor when the plaque was installed. Mayor Hernandez should be ashamed of himself for trying to rewrite history. Rather than crying about a stupid plaque, he should be more worried about all the trash and crime in our city. I say leave the plaque alone!!!!

Put your mirror down hernandez and do your job. The memorial is pretty when it’s open to the public once or twice a year but look around . Filthy potholed streets no code enforcement, boarded up businesses, weedy lots , graffitii scrawl and lots and lots of trash. Do something fool.

Thanks for putting San Benito on the INFAMOUS map! You should all be ashamed of yourselves! Especially YOU, Mr. Hernandez! How dare you allow something like this to be placed on the agenda! I can’t wait for your next election. It will be ADIOS for you!

  2. How sad. This little man needs a plaque with his name as mayor…. the plaque had him as former mayor but that wasn’t good enough. The men and one woman who died for this country are turning in their graves while this little man wants more GLORY. How sad for San Benito. What else is he going to go back and REVOTE on now that he has the WHOLE commission on his side? Maybe he’ll want the museum named after him too. How sad.

    1. Ditto. He continues to have no class and show his lack of education..
