The man who filed an ethics complaint against Mayor Joe H. Hernandez in January is currently behind bars on charges of harboring a runaway.
A press release issued by the San Benito Police Department (SBPD) reported that Alfonso Benavides, 57, was arrested Monday, May 7 after authorities said a 14-year-old child’s parent complained that Benavides was allegedly allowing the minor to stay at his Combes Street home.
Police officers prior to the arrest had warned Benavides about harboring runaway minors, but a warrant for his arrest issued after the parent provided officers with a sworn affidavit eventually led to his apprehension.

“Antonio,” Mr. Benavides’ appearance is way more appealing than your command of the English language and far less ugly than you reveal yourself to be by your comment. On second thought, you haven’t revealed yourself at all, cowardly hiding behind the singular name “Antonio,” not man enough to own your comments. He is far more courageous than you and others in this community for standing up for what is right and speaking out against those who abuse their authority and positions of trust.
Rest assured, before long, Mr. Benavides will be exonerated of these charges and those responsible for abusing their poitions to carry out this vendetta and harassment will be standing behind the placard mugging for the camera. Then we will see what unkind comments you will have about them…or what others might say about you.
If Mr. Benavides has fleas, he only contracted them from the mangy mutts running around this city lifting their rear legs on the law and the citizens. Like all mangy mutts, though, the dog catcher eventually catches them. The bigger the pack, the easier they are to spot and catch. Like every mutt, once that cage door slams they all start whining and doing whatever they can to get released, and that only makes it easier to catch the rest of the pack.
