Official use of a new symbol for the Harlingen-San Benito Metropolitan Planning Organization (HSBMPO) began before the entity honored the designer who created the emblem, Andrea Caraveo.

The Digital Media Design Technology (DMDT) major and 10 of her Texas State Technical College (TSTC) Harlingen classmates in an Advanced Digital Publishing class cooperated with the MPO to develop the logo.

The MPO presented Caraveo with a basket of prizes provided by sponsors Feb. 8 in Harlingen City Hall.

A highway with broken white stripes for a passing zone anchors the bottom of the circular-shaped logo and the large acronym MPO is on top of the pavement to separate what looks like green grass along the side of the road. The words “Harlingen” and “San Benito” unify the top of the circle shape and the words “Metropolitan Planning Organization” outline the exterior of the circle.

MPO Director Rebeca Castillo introduced HSBMPO members to Caraveo at the meeting and pointed to the meeting agenda, some stationery and the website, hsbmpo.com/default.aspx, that all bear the new symbol. It also will appear on HSBMPO social network messages and on some buses that operate on Valley Metro public transit routes in the Rio Grande Valley. The winning design evolved as the result of input from HSBMPO and revisions that 11 students within the class made on their separate projects after they exchanged critiques as part of the competitive development process, said Caraveo, whose class took up the assignment during summer semester 2011.
