San Benito native Hector Barrera of Gold Seal Publisher in California has teamed up with the San Benito News to hold an art contest ending in the month of June.
The winning entries will illustrate Barrera’s new book, “Bart: The Pear Tree That Grew An Apple.”
The book is based on his experiences in making his own scion tree named Bartlett, and his three years of research and experience in grafting fruit trees.
Barrera understands the hard work it takes to become a recognized artist, and is devoting his time to help the young talent in San Benito to fulfill their goals.
“I thought this was the best way to try and help those young people who’re trying to have a career in the art world,” he said.
The art contest will have 10 different categories in which to enter. They are as follows.
1. What Bart would look like (normal) as just an ordinary pear tree
2. What Bart would look like (surprised) to find an apple scion on top of his crown of branches
3. What Bart would look like (concerned) to find an apple scion
4. What Bart would look like (intrigued) to find an apple scion
5. What Bart would look like (scared) if he was part of an alien experiment
6. What Bart would look like without leaves asleep in the winter
7. What Bart would look like (yawning) waking up in the early spring with the apple scion grafted
8. What Bart would look like (indifferent) with pear blossoms and one apple blossom
9. What Bart would look like (happy) with branches full of leaves in the spring
10. What Bart would look like (pride) with a crown of branches full of pears and one apple (the only pear tree growing an apple, indicating something special).
Artists are allowed to enter more than one drawing in various entries, if they so desire, on standard 8.5×11 white typing paper with their name signed on the back. The contest is open to students of all ages who attend schools at San Benito CISD, IDEA San Benito, and the South Texas Academy of Medical Technology in San Benito.
Applications are available here or at the News office, located on 356 N. Sam Houston Blvd., and must be signed by a school teacher, counselor, librarian or administrator.
Three winners will be named and given a contract prize with first place being awarded $350 to submit five drawings, second place awarded $175 to submit three drawings, and third place awarded $125 to submit two drawings.
A short biography of each winner will be included in the book.
Deadline to enter will be June 8, in which entries, with the application attached, must be dropped off at the News office on or before that date or mailed to: Art Contest, 356 N. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito, TX 78586. Winners will be announced June 16.
