The annual Region 8 chess tournament will be held at the Veterans Memorial Academy in San Benito Saturday, Jan. 28 to Sunday Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The tournament is believed to have more than 100 schools participating, and approximately 1,400 students competing for their school. “This is going to be the biggest one for the valley,” said event organizer Victor Bailey. “It may even be the biggest one in the country.”
Bailey is a chess lover as well as all the other students who will be participating during the event. He has been involved in the game his entire life, and has worked in the Valley since his migration from Mississippi in 1998. “I see the good it does for all the students,” Bailey said. “It helps the kids grow academically and helps them use time and skillful knowledge when preparing for tests.”
