What was described as a “small fire” was reported today at Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary.
The location of the fire was inside a portable storage building behind the school, according to a San Benito CISD press release issued today.
The release read that the fire was reported at approximately 11:30 a.m. The building is used for storage and is not used for student instruction.
As a precautionary measure, students and staff were evacuated from the campus while the city’s fire department and police officials responded to the call.
Principal Ron Diaz commended students and staff members for their calm under pressure and praised the prompt response from emergency personnel and the city’s fire and police departments.
Letters informing parents about the incident are being sent home with students.
“Be assured that all students and staff members were never in any immediate danger. In an effort to maintain the safety and security of our students and staff, we immediately exited the school and moved the students away from the affected building,” Diaz said. “The fire department was immediately notified and they responded within minutes to quickly put out the fire.”
Diaz added, “We commend both staff and students for following proper procedures and ensuring the safety and security of all individuals.”
All San Benito CISD schools have procedures in place, which include monthly fire drills and fire prevention presentations. These are done on a routine basis in order to inform and educate the students and staff.
