LOS FRESNOS–The Falcons were dominant from the get-go against Nikki Rowe here at Leo Aguilar Stadium Friday night. Despite the Warriors playing an explosive game, the Falcons suffocating defense barely gave way to the Warriors’ offensive line. The end result was a hard earned 35-27 victory for the Falcons.
With a gradual start in the first quarter to a very nerve racking game by the middle of the third quarter, the Falcons’ defense didn’t let this slow start prevent them from coming hard and fast early on. Shutting out the Warriors’ spread out game tactic, the Falcons’ defensive end, Nick Cruz even managed to play the field momentarily. Cruz, snagging an interception with less than a minute left on the clock in the fourth quarter, brought the ball back to Falcon territory in just the nick of time.
Also greatly assisting the Falcons were running back, Eduardo Ramirez and quarterback, Freddy Beccera. Ramirez bolted to the end zone with a hefty 67-yard run with 5:43 left in the third quarter. The score brought the Falcons up to a 21-19 lead. Beccera, however, seemed to need a little more reassurance in the Falcons’ two point lead. Starting with a 47 yard touchdown early into the fourth quarter, Becerra finished the quarter by breaking away from the Warriors’ defense to complete a whopping 90 yard dash to the end zone, thus bringing the Falcons to a 35-19 score.
With 10 minutes left in the quarter, the Falcons continued to hold steady and did not let up.
Becerra, couldn’t be more pleased with not only his star performance, but the offensive unit as a whole. “In reference to my performance, I think I did good, but I really couldn’t have done it without the help of the offensive line. We did real good. I’m hoping that by next game, I’m just able to come off the ball sooner,” said Becerra.
Expressing the same sentiments, head coach, Clint Finley stressed the importance to continue improving.
“We just need to keep working hard. By this time of the season all the teams are only getting better. The reality of it is at this point if you’re not getting better, you’re only getting worse,” expressed Finley.
The Los Fresnos Falcons will go up against the Weslaco Panthers Friday, Sept. 23 on their home field. Kick-off is set 7:30 p.m.
