LA JOYA – The San Benito Greyhounds took the opportunity to hone their skills Friday night in La Joya, where they took on Laredo United in four 12-minute quarters of regulation-style play.
The scrimmage played much like a game with the exception of there being no kickoffs.
Scoring at will, the ’Hounds were victorious by a score of 41-28 against United that saw quarterback Jacob Puente take to the air with success.
“Tonight was an awesome team win,” Puente said before refocusing on next week’s week one debut against the Weslaco East Wildcats. “Everyone contributed, but we’re not satisfied, and everyone is hungry. These scrimmages have helped us find our weaknesses, so we’ll be ready for East.”
Head Coach and Athletic Director Spencer Gantt was pleased with his team’s performance.
“I saw some great things. I saw the offensive line coming off the football, receivers doing a great job of blocking, and the quarterback having some confidence and throwing great balls,” Gantt said. “Defensively, we did a lot of good things in the first half but may have run out of the gas in the second half and busted coverage.”
On the Wildcats, Gantt said, “They’re a little different as a football team. They’re very big, very strong, and they’re a smashmouth team that likes to line up and try to jam it down your throat. But (Defensive Coordinator) Dave Evans does a great job of scheming those guys and every other team. And fortunately our offense is really coming together.”
