backpackThe San Benito Friends of the Library have launched an effort to collect at least 50 backpacks as part of the non-profit organization’s first annual Back to School Celebration.

According to Friends of the Library President Ernest Quintanilla, the backpacks will be given away (while supplies last) as part of a drawing on Thursday, Aug. 18. The celebration is slated from 5-6:30 p.m. inside the San Benito Public Library Meeting Room, located on 101 W. Rose St. Attendance is limited to the first 70 participants.

Other festivities will include presentations by the San Benito Fire and Police departments on school safety. Refreshments will be served.

“We’re just wanting to help out the kids,” Quintanilla said when asked what impact he hoped the event would bring about.

Friends of the Library Secretary Valerie Hopperstad said, “What we’ve done is Ernest spoke with the fire department, and they’re on board with providing a minimum of 12 backpacks. I’m personally getting 12, and we hope to receive the same from the police department.”

She added that El Gallito has expressed interest in contributing.

“So we’ve got at least 36 (backpacks) that we can count on, but if we can hit 50, or even go over… that’d be great,” she continued.

Furthermore, Hopperstad said the backpacks will be furnished with some school supplies as well.

“We hope this also brings more people into the library as well, so we can have more of a flow of people coming in. It’s good exposure,” Quintanilla added.

For those interested in contributing, call Hopperstad at (956) 346-6138.
