SBCISD logoA number of San Benito CISD construction projects continue to progress while others have been scheduled for completion.

Work on a new cafeteria and three additional classrooms at Frank Roberts Elementary – a $1.5 million project paid for by IFA (Instructional Facilities Allotment) monies – is nearing completion but will not be ready in time for the start of school on Aug. 22. In the meantime, Superintendent of Schools Antonio G. Limón reported the inclusion of two portables toward the rear of the campus as temporary classrooms for students.

Moreover, the superintendent said attendance has been adjusted to accommodate 100 students elsewhere; particularly they’ll be rezoned to Judge Oscar De La Fuente Elementary. “We wanted to get the numbers down to a little less than usual, and then we’ll go back to normal once construction is finished,” said Limón, who further noted that Frank Roberts had the smallest cafeteria of all the elementaries and, following the completion of the new facility, should comparable to all the other cafeterias in the district.

Another project, this one awaiting approval from the school board for its substantial completion, is the air conditioning system at the San Benito High School Sports Complex, which at a price of $250,000 in EDA (Existing Debt Allotment) monies has been retrofitted with a new system. Also at the high school is a $2.5 million roof reconstruction project, paid for with IDA monies, that Limón said will be completed in time for the first day of school

Over at Bobby Morrow Stadium a track is also awaiting its substantial completion approval from the school board. The new $169,000 track was necessary, according to Limón, after the old track suffered from wear and tear.

“It had become hard and brittle, this one is more suited to the athlete to be able to run and perform,” the superintendent said.

Meanwhile, the district’s new Angela Leal Elementary remains scheduled to open the first day of school. Costing $7.5 million, Limón said its construction came in below budget. “We were able to save some money,” he said.
