An area retailer may have donated the fishing rods and equipment, but the many families are what really supplied the fun at this year’s Kids Fish Tournament in San Benito.

It was a great day for fishing, food, and family fun at the Seventh Annual Resaca Kids Fish Tournament, which was held by the San Benito Chamber of Commerce on Saturday at the Heavin Resaca Trail. Many hopeful kids cast their lines in hopes of catching the grand prize, but only one, Chris Cavazos of San Benito, was named top angler.

Fifteen-year-old Cavazos reeled in a catch weighing 13.11 pounds that won him the grand prize – a four-man paddleboat donated by the Tractor Supply Company of San Benito.

Wal-Mart donated other prizes such as fishing rods and equipment.

Winners in the 4-8 age division included Chris Hernandez, 6, first place; Clarissa Cavazos, 8, second place; and Joshua Galvan, 5, third place. In the 9-12 division, Alexandra Andrade, 11, took home first place followed by Brian Garza, 11, in second place and Eddie Abrego, 11, in third place. Finally, in the 13-15 age division are Chris Cavazos, 13, in first place and BJ Olivares, 13, in second.

But to Chamber President Zeke Padilla, the day wasn’t about winning.

“The whole purpose of the tournament was to bring families out to spend time together,” Padilla said. “We wanted to host an event that would be of no cost to families and would bring them together to enjoy the resaca. Our philosophy is very simple: A strong community starts with strong families.”
