Concepcion strikes out 16: WhiteWings beat Colts

WhiteWingsHARLINGEN – Alexander Concepcion struck out 16 in six innings to lead the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings past the San Angelo Colts 5-4 on Tuesday at Harlingen Field.

Danny Rondon added two strikeouts in two and one-third innings and Edgar Martinez struck out both batters he faced while picking up his 10th save to bring the game total to 20 strikeouts.

After giving up one run on two hits over the first three batters of the game, Concepcion (3-2) struck out seven-straight Colts (13-12). He struck out the side in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The final nine outs he recorded were on strikeouts. All nine Colts struck out at least once against Concepcion, who entered the game with 14 strikeouts in four starts.

Concepcion allowed five singles and did not walk anyone.

The WhiteWings (15-10) got their first run against Brian Henschel (1-4) right away. Francisco Santana led off the first with a double and scored one out later on a ground-rule double by Leivi Ventura.

Brandon Decker led off the third with a single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Antonio DeJesus to make it 2-0.

A pair of the errors helped the WhiteWings get two more runs in the fourth. Gabriel Ortiz led off with an infield single and Wilmer Pino reached on a dropped fly ball in right field. A wild pick-off throw allowed the runners to advance and score on a single by Wesley Dimitt.

David Peralta hit his sixth home run in the fifth to make it 5-1.

The Colts knocked out Rondon with one out in the ninth with a three-run home run by Andrew Riddick to complete the scoring.
