For a San Benito graduate, the sky is the limit, both figuratively and literally.
Christella “Christy” Medina, a 1989 graduate of San Benito High School, has successfully obtained a pilot’s license from Indy Jet Center at the Greenwood Municipal Airport in Greenwood, Indiana.
“I’m very proud of her. I just feel so proud. I have six (kids), and she’s the fifth,” said Lupita Medina, Christy’s mother.
Christy, who works as a Chemist for Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals in Indianapolis, began taking flying lessons in April of last year. She said that she would go to the lessons after work or on the weekends. Described as very determined by her mother, Christy successfully completed the course and obtained her pilot’s license in November of last year.
“It’s a small airport, but they give flying lessons there,” said Lupita, describing Greenwood Municipal Airport. “She felt great.”
Lupita’s excitement and pride in not only Christy, but all of her children is evident with her seemingly permanent smile as she describes her first flight with Christy.
“It was great. I didn’t get scared,” Lupita said. “I had been in planes, but not a Cessna. You have to have your earphones to communicate with the rest. My daughter from Corpus Christi went last year, and she flew us together. I wasn’t scared.”
Lupita is planning to visit Christy for the Fourth of July. When asked if she would be flying with Christy again, she responded with an enthusiastic and definite “yes.”
“I felt in the clouds,” said Lupita, recalling the flight with her daughter. “We went up and we were so high. I felt in the clouds, near Heaven. She flew us to several cities around Indiana for about two hours. It felt great.”
