DHSAuthorities with U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained seven men in San Benito who’re believed to be in the country illegally, this as part of an ongoing human smuggling investigation.

According to ICE Spokeswoman Adelina A. Pruneda of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ICE agents apprehended the seven men who were reportedly passengers of a pickup truck traveling in the vicinity of Cemetery Road in San Benito Monday evening.

Pruneda could not confirm as of presstime what law enforcement agency instigated the pursuit but did verify that the incident stemmed from a traffic stop. The seven men reportedly led authorities on a high speed chase at approximately 7:40 p.m. before bailing out of the truck; they were eventually detained for questioning as part of an ongoing human smuggling case, the significance of which may be evident, Pruneda said, in their countries of origin. Specifically, she said the seven men detained represent the countries of Ecuador, Honduras, El Salvador, and Mexico.
