The San Benito Lady ’Hounds struggled against the Brownsville Lopez Lady Lobos Friday, a team which they had brutally defeated in the first round of district play.
In seven innings of play the Lady ’Hounds scraped off the win with a score of 3-0.
Their typical no mercy style of play the Lady ’Hounds usually bring to each one of their games was notably absent. San Benito struggled to get key hits that helped move their runners over. Their swift base running was their biggest strength but the hits that brought those runners in weren’t there. Although they struggled offensively their defense looked notably better than last week’s defeat against Los Fresnos.
The Lady ’Hounds did score the first two runs in the first two innings but lost steam throughout the game, their final run was in the fourth inning. The Lady ’Hounds left 10 runners on base during the game but allowed only two hits to the Lady Lobos.
San Benito ends its season Thursday night in Brownsville in a rematch with the Hanna Lady Eagles, whom they had trouble defeating the first time around. The Lady ’Hounds could be in jeopardy of losing the District 32-5A crown if they do not win the last two games. Their next opponent will be against the Brownsville Porter Cowgirls.
On Friday night’s game, Lady ’Hounds Head Coach Elias Martinez said, “We played flat and our bats never came around. We just didn’t hit the ball.”
The Lady ’Hounds must be able to finish strong in order to secure their seventh district championship and a good seed in the playoffs. “If we don’t snap out of it, it could cost us the championship and all the hard worked we’ve put in all season long. It’s not how you start; it’s how you finish,” Martinez said.
The Lady ’Hounds continue their final games Tuesday against Porter in Brownsville and Thursday they will travel to Brownsville once more to face the Lady Eagles.
