The scene at Greyhound Stadium Tuesday night was something out of a big sports movie. The Los Fresnos Falcons, a top team in District 32-5A who has a history of producing playoff contending squads, and the underdog San Benito Greyhounds faced off in a thrilling game that had all fans in attendance at the edge of their seats.
The Greyhounds claimed the victory but not without a little drama and suspense along the way.
San Benito started off strong, leading the way was starting pitcher Albert Vallejo who shut out the Falcons in the first inning and then scored the first run of the night. The Greyhounds continued to hold them in the second and delivered big offensively when Adan Guzman slammed a ball deep to the centerfield wall with bases loaded. Guzman picked up a triple and brought in three runs as they Greyhounds took the lead.
Los Fresnos answered back at the top of the third with two runs and in the fifth with another two runs that brought the game to a tie. Los Fresnos took over in the seventh as they scored one run. Their lead was short-lived as the ’Hounds stepped up to bat in their last chance at claiming victory.
Gerry Arizpe started things off with a single, Vallejo then moved Arizpe over to second base with a sacrifice bunt to put him in scoring position. With two outs Guzman became selective at the plate and got on base with a walk. Relieving pitcher Jacob Puente got the Greyhounds out of a pickle when with two strikes and two outs he smacked a hit into right center, Arizpe and Guzman raced home and scored two runs. The entire Greyhounds baseball greeted Guzman at home plate and cheered as they earned the victory with a final score of 6-5.
Greyhound Head Coach Xavier Acosta praised the ’Hounds’ hard work and endurance that helped push them over a great Los Fresnos team. “Adan and Albert had another great game. Jacob also fought through. We did the little things right, we moved runners and got big hits. Unfortunately we made some mistakes, but they did very well. They definitely deserved to win tonight,” continued a proud Acosta.
With Tuesday’s victory a playoff appearance could still be possible for the ’Hounds. They are set to travel to Weslaco and battle with the Panthers on Friday.
