With an energetic fan base, the San Benito Greyhounds lost a hard-fought battle against the Brownsville Rivera Raiders Tuesday night.
With the support of more Greyhound fans in attendance the team only allowed two runs throughout the entire game. Senior ace Albert Vallejo pitched a great game with a solid defense behind him, a defense that spectators had yet to see until Tuesday night.
Greyhound Head Coach Xavier Acosta gave much praise to Vallejo, stating, “Albert always pitches well, but tonight has was extremely good.”
After three intense scoreless innings Rivera got ahead by one run off an error with two outs. Catcher Adan Guzman got the Greyhounds out of trouble that inning with runners at second and third base. Guzman went diving after a foul ball and made an amazing catch that saved the Greyhounds from getting further behind.
The Greyhounds were not able to bring in any runs even with batters in scoring positions. The Greyhound defense continued to hold Rivera from scoring until the top of the seventh when the Raiders once again scored off an error. The Greyhounds attempted to make a comeback in the bottom of the seventh when Jacob Huerta hit a deep fly ball into center, which gave Vallejo enough time to tap up on third base and put a run up for the ’Hounds. The comeback was short-lived as the Greyhounds failed to tie the game and force an extra inning. Great hits that moved runners came from Guzman, L.J Garcia, Huerta, and Vallejo. The final score was 2-1.
Acosta was not content with the outcome of the game but praised his team for improving its defense. Acosta said, “We didn’t run bases well, we left too many runners on base and didn’t execute with runners in scoring position. Defensively we made the routine plays and didn’t make too many errors. It was a tough loss.”
The ’Hounds continued district play Friday evening by taking on Pace in Brownsville.
